was the son of William Herbert of S. Julians, Monmouth, and great-grandson in the male line of Sir William Herbert (died ) 1st earl of Pembroke. His mother was Jane, daughter of Edward Griffith of Penrhyn, Caernarfonshire, from whom he inherited lands in Anglesey and Caernarvonshire to add to his Monmouthshire estates. Although apparently not a university . The tomb is commonly supposed to be that of Sir William Hastings, illegitimate son of John. Lord Hastings, and half-brother of the then Lord of Abergavenny. Churchyard speaks of the tomb in his “Worthines of Wales. [sic]” and devotes some rhymes to the entombed knight— “He was a man of fame. His shield of blacke he bares on brest.
